15 Pennsylvania stores will close in 2017. Kmart, on Wednesday Sears and Macy's announced that they are going to close their department stores at multiple locations, amounting to a total of 15 in Pennsylvania between the three chains. Kmart is going to close six Pennsylvania stores. Sears will be closing three and Macy's are going to close six stores, which includes stores in Bucks and Montgomery counties.
Sears, which owns Kmart, said that they are going to close 150 stores by the end of spring, it is a part of "difficult, but a necessary step as Sears are going to take actions to strengthen their company’s operations and fund its transformation," the company said in a statement.
On Wednesday Macy's announced that they are going to close 68 stores across the country in order to save money, and reinvest in e-commerce and give small department store’s a better customer experience, the company said in an announcement. By the end of 2017 all the stores in Pennsylvania will be closed.
Across the Country all the department stores experienced a disappointing holiday sales, and also the stock prices were declining, just before the closures were announced.
Most of the stores in Pennsylvania, which have decided to close have struggled with their financial performance for years and “we only kept them open to maintain the local jobs and hoping that things would turn around”, Sears said.
According to a statement given by the company, The company said that they have to make hard decisions in order to meet their objectives of returning to profitability and they will continue to do so, which will give their best performing stores a chance for success.
