Subway crash at Market-Frankford, line 4 injured.

An out-of-service subway train rear-ended a stopped train in a rail yard on Tuesday (Feb 21st). The incident caused some of the cars to jump the railroad track and hit a third train, officials said. Four people were injured in the incident, including an operator hospitalized in severe condition.

Andrew Busch a spokesperson for the Southern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority said that the Market-Frankford Line trains were near the 69th Street Transportation Center on a loop where trains turn around to get back into service.

A Train was going to head back to downtown Philadelphia when it was hit in the back. The derailed cars hit another train, which was waiting to go back in service.

That subway train that was rear ended was carrying passengers on board, and Busch said it was not clear, since it was not in service.

Busch did not have any details about the two passengers, who were among the injured people. But, he described as non-life threatening.

Three investigators were headed to the site of the collision and derailment, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

Later on Tuesday afternoon the service was again restored on the Market-Frankford line.

The crash is the latest ordeal for the Market-Frankford line. The line runs as a subway downtown and it is elevated in west and northeast Philadelphia.

SEPTA took down dozens of cars out of service after a crack was found in a main load-carrying beam on a car on the line earlier this month.

Due to the reduced fleet some disruptions are faced by the public, but the agency was approaching full service on the line.
