Pennsylvania Governor Strips Lieutenant Gov of Security

Breaking years of precedent, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is stripping the state’s Lt. Governor Mike Stack and his wife of state protection following an investigation by the state inspector general's office into how Stack and his wife treated troopers and state workers, who guard and serve him.

Tom Wolf hand delivered a letter addressed to Stack on Friday, informing him of the decision. The decision dropped jaws in the state Capitol, since lieutenant governors have had state police protection for decades in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Wolf said that the department of general services will provide limited cleaning, ground keeping and maintenance at the Lt. Governor’s officials residence at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County, and only under supervision at prearranged times.

"I do not delight in this decision, but I believe it is a necessary step to protect commonwealth employees."

Mr. Wolf did not specify the issue; neither gave details about the complaints. Media reports suggest that Stacks verbally abused their state police security and household staff and pressured the state police drivers to use lights and sirens to bypass the traffic lights in non-emergency situations.

Later, Stack provided scant detail about the issue and what he felt he did wrong.

He admitted to saying "things in anger or stress or frustration" that he wishes he had not said.

Officials said that the cost to staff and maintain the Lt. Governor’s official residence is about $450,000 per annum. Stack's salary is $162,000 a year.
