World Cancer Day 2019: Indian Celebrities Who Battled/Battling Cancer

Cancer, a fatal disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue, is the most unpredictable diseases that can happen to anyone, anytime, and in any part f the body. Globally, about 42 million people suffered from any of the forms of cancer.

Many of the popular personalities and celebrities have also fallen prey to this fatal disease. Earlier Indian actress Manisha Koirala managed to defeat cancer and now is currently an inspiration to many. She has said how cancer changed her way of life and how now she has opted for a healthy, organic lifestyle. Similarly, Yuvraj Singh fought cancer and gave hopes to so many. 

Here are some of the celebrities that battled or are battling cancer:

Lisa Ray

Lisa-Ray

The noted model and actor was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow, in 2009. The rare disease is treatable but incurable. In April 2010, Ray announced she was cancer-free but not completely cured.

Sonali Bendre

Sonali Bendre is suffering from Metastasis of Cancer. Cancer had metastasized and was a high-grade malignancy. She is undergoing chemotherapy; however, the actor recently posted a photo and video of her returning to work "after a major sabbatical."

Mumtaz

Mumtaz

The veteran beauty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 when she was 54-years-old. 6 chemotherapies and 35 radiations later, she managed to hold and was quoted telling Bangalore times: "I don't give up easily. Even death will have to fight me."

Tahira Kashyap

Ayushmann Khurrana’s wife, Tahira Kashyap has recently been diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer, which she confirmed on her Instagram as well.

Anurag Basu

The ‘Barfi’ director was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer, and doctors told him that he had only 50 percent chance of survival in 2004. But fought the disease like a champ. He wrote scripts during his treatment for Life In A Metro and Gangster.

Rakesh Roshan

Actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has been diagnosed earlier this month with an early stage of squamous cell carcinoma, a type of throat cancer. The squamous cell carcinoma is caused by uncontrolled growth of abnormal cancerous cells in the lining of the throat.

Irrfan Khan

The news of Irrfan Khan diagnosed with cancer shook Bollywood earlier this year. He is suffering from a rare type of cancer of a neuroendocrine tumor.

Rajesh Khanna

Rajesh-Khanna

Rajesh Khanna was diagnosed with cancer in the year 2011. After fighting hard for one year, he passed away in the year 2012. He was 69 years old when he died of cancer. He was under chemotherapy for the last year.

Nargis Dutt

Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer sometimes in 1980. She went to New York for her treatment. After returning back to India, she was admitted to hospital once again as she was deteriorating. She went to coma and a day later she passed away.

Barbara Mori

Barbara-Mori

The young girl was diagnosed with cancer in the year 2010. Fortunately, it was a very early stage of cancer and curable. She underwent treatment for a short period of time and came out of the disease in the same year 2010.
