Former captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson, made an unexpected announcement on Friday, deciding to step away from international cricket while the Test series against England is in progress. Williamson was part of the elite group in modern cricket known as the 'Fab Four' with Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Joe Root. He leaves the sport as New Zealand's top scorer in international cricket, with a total of 19,346 runs, and in Test matches, with 9,515 runs. Over a successful career lasting more than 16 years, the 35-year-old achieved 48 centuries and six double-centuries. He started his career with New Zealand in 2010 and stepped back from T20I cricket in November of last year, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer for his country in that format with 2,575 runs. In addition to his batting talent, Williamson was greatly respected by his teammates for his humility and leadership. He captained the BLACKCAPS in all formats during a successful period from 2016 to 2024, which included leading the team to two ICC World Cup Finals, three semi-finals, and winning the first-ever ICC World Test Championship in 2021.

With Williamson's retirement, he will no longer participate in the current three-match Test series against England, with the next Test scheduled to start on Wednesday of next week. In his last match for the BLACKCAPS, he scored 0 and 18 runs, and the team lost the first Test by 115 runs at Lord's. New Zealand has not yet announced a replacement for him. BLACKCAPS coach Rob Walter expressed great respect and admiration for Williamson. “Anyone who has had the chance to work with Kane knows he is an exceptional player and person. Even though it was a brief period, it was truly a privilege to see him in action and hear his opinions about the team and the game. His statistics and batting abilities are impressive, but what he means to the BLACKCAPS and to cricket globally will be what he is remembered for."

"The influence he has had on the team's culture and standards will be a lasting part of its identity. Kane has always put the team first, and while we are sad to see him leave, we are glad to know he is satisfied and at peace with his choice. He is an amazing player, an outstanding teammate, a remarkable leader, and a fantastic representative for our sport”.
